But due to shortages, the US was forced to equip some models with an Aeroproducts propeller.
They were renamed P-51K and were mainly used in the Pacific theatre of war.
The P-51K and P-51D were both fast and capable of flying long-range missions, and could serve as bomber escorts or attack enemy ground installations themselves.
In addition to its role as a fighter, some P-51s were equipped with cameras and used as reconnaissance aircraft. Such aircraft were built on the basis of the P-51D and designated F-6D.
