Piper Cub L4 - Grasshopper

The US military, as well as the British RAF, soon realised that the rather large and complicated types such as the O-47 or Lysander were too big for artillery observation and liaison roles.
Lighter aircraft with the ability to make very short takeoffs and landings proved much more successful.
And arguably the most famous of all types in this category is the Piper L-4 Grasshopper, which was developed from the civilian J-3 Cub, which had performed really well during the US Army's pre-war exercises.
