And perhaps the most famous of all types in this category is the Piper L-4 Grasshopper, which was developed from the civilian J-3 Cub, which had performed really well during the US Army's pre-war exercises.
One of these aircraft was made famous by US Army Major Charles Carpenter, who wanted to get involved in the fighting rather than just watch.
He had the ground crew attach bazookas to the wing supports of his Piper and was thus able to add five German tanks and several other vehicles to his kill list by the end of the war.
The aircraft was nicknamed "Rosie, the rocketeer".
