One of the most famous German fighter aircraft of World War II was the Messerschmitt Bf110, a twin-engine heavy fighter (destroyer) that later evolved into a fighter-bomber and then the Luftwaffe's primary night fighter.
The Bf110C was the first major production version of this aircraft and attempts to increase its range resulted in the Bf110D long-range destroyer.
This extended-range version, based on the Bf110C, was equipped with external fuel tanks (e.g. 900 liter underwing tanks or the "dachshund-bellied" tank, the latter occasionally causing mysterious mid-air explosions due to inadequately ventilated and volatile fuel-air mixtures) .
The Bf110D was deployed in time to take part in the Norwegian campaign against British and French forces in the far north of the country.
Later, many aircraft were stationed in Norway to carry out anti-shipping missions and long-range attacks against the north of the United Kingdom.
The special Bf110D-1/R-1, the first long-range variant, entered service in May 1940.
However, their huge 1200 liter "dachshund belly" external tank compromised the aircraft's maneuverability.
