Although the D-Type was introduced on various fronts, it was significantly inferior to the Allied fighters, with a top speed of 400 km/h. However, there was still room for maneuver on the Eastern Front, where there were few high-performance Allied fighters. To counteract the wing load, which has increased almost to the limit through repeated modifications, the D-5 features extended main wing tips and is equipped with a removable main landing gear. In later versions the crash brakes were removed.
The G-1 was an anti-tank aircraft designed to attack Soviet tanks and was equipped with two Flak 18 37 mm cannons for anti-tank attacks under the main wings. In 1942, the plan to use the Stuka to attack Soviet tanks took shape, and in December a prototype aircraft with an underwing machine gun based on the Ju87D-1 was manufactured and tested. The results of this test were very satisfactory and confirmed that a single shot from a 37mm cannon into the rear engine section of a tank could disable it. The Type G-1 based on the Ju87D-3 was immediately mass-produced.
The G-2 was based on the D-5, with 37 mm cannons mounted on the underside of both wings like the G-1, and the 20 mm cannons on the wings were removed. The G-1 and G-2 operated primarily on the Eastern Front, where they demonstrated their effectiveness against Soviet anti-tank attacks.
