The Bell AH-1, developed from the Bell UH-1B, became the world's first helicopter to be designed as a pure combat helicopter.
Although the US Army replaced this type of helicopter with the AH-64 "Apache" decades ago, the United States Marine Corps continues to use the machines and continually adapts them to current needs.
The Bell AH-1Z "Viper" is a twin-engine combat helicopter based on the AH-1W "Super Cobra" and was developed as part of the H-1 upgrade program. Compared to the AH-1W "Whiskey", the AH-1Z "Zulu" has a four-blade main rotor system, an improved gearbox and new target optics.
The helicopter has been in use by the United States Marine Corps since 2010.
