
It is the US Navy's first all-weather attack aircraft.
Before 1962, the aircraft was known as the A2F and was renamed the A-6 Intruder in service. Thanks to its outstanding all-weather capability, the A-6 soon became the primary attack force of the Navy and Marines and saw service in the Vietnam War.
The A-6As were equipped with the DIANE system, the most advanced navigation/targeting system available at the time.
Reliability problems were resolved after a few years.
480 A-6As were built, and 47 of them were converted to another type.
