It was manufactured since the early 1960s to provide the Armée de l'Air with a reliable and effective fighter aircraft.
The Mirage III quickly became a commercial success and was widely exported to several countries involved in numerous conflicts between the 1970s and 1980s.
Characterized by the delta wing design without a horizontal tail, it was able to exceed speeds of Mach 1 thanks to its Snecma Atar afterburning turbojet engine.
Following the introduction of the Mirage IIIC single-seat interceptor, a new multi-role and attack version was implemented. The Mirage IIIE was born and was a successful version that was produced in significant numbers.
It was characterized by a forward fuselage extension to enable the installation of the new avionics system. Using the same airframe, including mounting cameras in the nose, Dassault also developed the reconnaissance variant designed as the Mirage IIIR.
