It was so important to the USSR's war effort that Joseph Stalin personally intervened to ensure a high production rate.
By the end of the war, over 36,000 had been built, making it the most produced military aircraft in aviation history.
The aircraft was characterised by armour integrated into the airframe, which protected vital areas such as the cockpit, engine and fuel tank.
Production of the single-seat version of the Il-2 began in March 1941, but heavy losses led to the development of a two-seat version with a rear gunner.
At the end of 1943, a version with outer wings swept back by 15 degrees was introduced in order to achieve a better centre of gravity.
Together with the T-34 tank, the Il-2 contributed significantly to the Soviet victory.
