Shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, the Reggiane Re 2000 took part in the competition for the standard fighter aircraft of the Italian Air Force.
Although the type was quite capable, it did not succeed and most of the production was destined for export.
However, the Regia Aeronautica decided to test the type and used it mainly in the dangerous operations against Malta.
