It entered service with the Luftwaffe in 1940 and was produced until mid-1944.
A total of 845 production aircraft were built.
The FW 189А-1 version had a defensive armament of two MG 15 machine guns.
It was used extensively and with great success on the Eastern Front.
Its Russian nickname was "Rama" (frame) and referred to the characteristic shape of the tail booms.
