The Bf 109F modification, designed in the spring of 1940, became one of the best fighter aircraft of that time. It had a more powerful DB 601E engine and significant improvements in aerodynamics. Since March 1941, Bf 109F-2 fighter aircraft were produced, which had a 15 mm MG 151/15 automatic cannon. In June 1941, the Bf 109F-4 modification appeared with 20 mm MG 151/20, better armor and other improvements. In the Bf 109F-4z/Trop modification, produced since August 1941, anti-dust filters and the GM 1 boost system were installed.
The Bf 109F became the basis for German fighter pilots during the Barbarossa operation. They took part in tough air battles from the Kola Peninsula to the Crimean Peninsula. Bf 109Fs have been deployed in North Africa since the fall. Many German aces – W. Molders, G. Lutzov, H. Trautloft, H.-J. Marseille and others piloted these fighters.
