The Messerschmitt Bf 109F, deliveries to the Luftwaffe began in the spring of 1941, was a further development of the Bf 109. In terms of aerodynamics and handling, it was considered the ideal fighter.
The high performance was achieved by reducing the armament.
Production of the Bf 109F was discontinued after 2,300 aircraft were built. Modifications: The Bf 109F-1 was armed with two 7.92 mm machine guns and a 20 mm cannon in reverse order of the engine's cylinders; the F-2 had a 15 mm cannon; the F-3 was equipped with the DB-601E engine (1,350 hp); the F-4 had a 20 mm cannon and improved armor; the F-6 was a reconnaissance aircraft.
