The Thunderbolt II (also called the “Warthog”) was practically built around its remarkable 30 mm GAU-8 cannon, which can penetrate armor with its special high-powered ammunition.
The aircraft was used extensively during the Gulf War, where it successfully destroyed several hundred Iraqi vehicles with minimal own losses despite strong enemy defenses using conventional firepower and guided missiles.
Around the mid-2000s, the A-10 was modernized to the “C” standard to meet changing and evolving operational requirements.
The A-10C is indeed the most modern version of the robust and reliable attack aircraft, featuring the most advanced weapon systems and target acquisition systems.
