The Grumman A-6 Intruder was developed as a replacement for the A-1 Skyraider. It is the US Navy's first all-weather fighter aircraft. Before 1962, the aircraft was called A2F and was renamed A-6 Intruder when in service. Due to its outstanding all-weather capability, the A-6 soon became the main strike force of the Navy and Marine Corps and was used in the Vietnam War.

The A-6As were equipped with the DIANE system, the most modern navigation/targeting system at the time. However, the reliability problems were solved after a few years. 480 A-6As were built and 47 of them were converted to another type.
