The Grumman A-6 Intruder was developed as a replacement for the A-1 Skyraider. It is the US Navy's first all-weather fighter aircraft. Before 1962, the aircraft was called A2F and was renamed A-6 Intruder when it was in service. Due to its outstanding all-weather capability, the A-6 soon became the main attack force of the Navy and Marine Corps and was used in the Vietnam War.

The A-6E is the last production model of the Intruder family. It was developed for attack missions. A new AN/APQ-148 radar replaced the old version and the DIANE system was replaced by the latest computer system. In the late 1970s, the new CAINS navigation system was installed. The CAINS A-6E can be recognized by the additional air scoop on top of the fuselage near the vertical stabilizer.
