The Corsair was adopted by the United States Air Force and the Air National Guard to replace the A-1 Skyraider, F-100 Super Sabre, and F-105 Thunderchief. The aircraft was also exported to Greece in the 1970s and to Portugal and Thailand in the late 1980s. The A-7's design was based on Chance Vought's successful supersonic F-8 Crusader. It was one of the first fighter jets to feature a head-up display, an inertial navigation system (INS), and a turbofan engine.
The A-7A was the first production version.
Early U.S. Navy Corsair IIs were armed with two 20 mm Colt Mk-12 cannons, each with a 250-round magazine.
The maximum armament, primarily mounted on the wing pylons, was 6,804 kg, but this was limited by the maximum takeoff weight, meaning the full weapons load could only be carried with significantly reduced internal fuel.
