The project was launched in the 1980s to replace the outdated Fiat G-91Y fighter-bombers in the squadrons of the Italian Air Force.
This need was compounded by the Brazilian aviation's need to replace the MB-326.
The AMX has an aerodynamic layout characterized by the high swept wing configuration and can reach a maximum speed of 1000 km/h thanks to its Rolls-Royce Spey 807 engine.
In its Italian version, it is equipped with an M61 Vulcan 20 mm cannon and can carry 3800 kg of attack armament.
The Ghibli was also used in various areas of operation (Afghanistan, Libya) to carry reconnaissance missions and to provide as close tactical support as possible to ground troops.
