It first entered service with the Royal Navy in April 1980.
In 1993, an improved version was produced for the Royal Navy as the Sea Harrier FA2, which improved its air-to-air capabilities and weapons compatibility and featured a more powerful engine.
The aircraft was retired early by the Royal Navy in 2006.
