The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is an American two-seat, twin-engine, long-range, all-weather, supersonic interceptor and fighter-bomber aircraft originally developed by McDonnell Aircraft for the United States Navy.
Proving highly adaptable, it first saw service with the Navy in 1961 before being adopted by the United States Marine Corps and United States Air Force and becoming a vital part of their air force in the mid-1960s.
Phantom production ran from 1958 to 1981 with a total of 5,195 aircraft built, making it the most built American supersonic military aircraft in history and cementing its position as an iconic Cold War fighter aircraft.
The first USAF Phantoms in Vietnam were F-4Cs from the 43rd Tactical Fighter Squadron arrived in December 1964
