After Lockheed Martin Corporation won the JSF program with its X-35 design, the X-35 was renamed the F-35.
As planned, three different F-35 variants were developed simultaneously.
These are the F-35A conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variant, the F-35Be short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) variant, and the F-35C carrier variant (CV).
The F-35 is named after Lockheed Martin's famous World War II P-38 Lightning.
Today, it is the most produced fourth-generation fighter aircraft in the world.
Many countries have ordered it or are considering ordering it.
