The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is one of the most famous fighters in aviation history and also one with the longest service life: its history began in the late 1950s and ended for some air forces in the mid-2000s.
From its unique aerodynamic design, characterized by a slender fuselage and a very small wing area, the combat-capable two-seat advanced trainer version TF-104 was developed.
One of the most widely used versions, the TF-104G manufactured by Lockheed, was a basic training aircraft for all fighter pilots before they could enter the cockpits of the single-seat fighter versions F-104G or F-104S.
Compared to the single-seater, the TF-104G did not have the 20 mm gun and the centerline pylon, but thanks to the General Electric J79 turbojet engine, the pilot and trainer could have the same flight experience and performance as in the fighter.
Many NATO air forces such as Belgium, Holland, Norway, Spain, Turkey, Germany and Italy used the TF-104G for training purposes.
