
Besides a significantly more powerful engine, the MiG-23's most important innovation was its sweep wing.
Like the sweep wings of the US Air Force's F-111, the wing pitch could be changed in flight. Fully swept wings allow for shorter takeoff and landing rolls and allow for the carriage of a heavier weapons load. With fully swept wings, the MiG-23 achieves higher speeds.
The wing pitch can be adjusted to three levels: 16, 45, and 72 degrees.
The prototype's maiden flight took place in April 1967, and the MiG-23 entered service in 1971.
