Production of the Yak-38 Forger began in 1975, making it the world's second operational VSTOL aircraft after the Harrier series. The aircraft's wings are centrally mounted, delta-shaped with blunt tips and negative rake. There is a turbo engine and two lift nozzles. There are two exhaust pipes on the underside of the rear fuselage. Large, semi-circular air intakes are located under the cockpit well in front of the wings. The fuselage is long and has a pointed nose and tapered tail.

The Yak-38M was an improved version of the Yak-38. The Yak-38M entered service with the Soviet Naval Aviation in June 1985, and a total of 50 Yak-38Ms were produced.
