The Saab 37 Viggen is an already retired Swedish single-seat, single-engine, short- to medium-range fighter aircraft.
Development work on the type began at Saab in 1952, and after choosing a delta-wing configuration that was radical at the time, the resulting aircraft made its maiden flight on 8 February 1967 and entered service on 21 June 1971.
It was the first Canard design to be produced in series.
Depicted aircraft:
AJ 37 7-62, c/n 37062, call sign Gustav 62, F7-Wing, Såtenäs, in the 1990s. The 7-62 featured a later version of the vertical stabiliser and an air intake in the centre pylon.
AJ 37 7-22, c/n 37022, call sign Gustav 22, F7-Wing, Satenäs, 1973. During the visit to Büchel in West Germany, where an air show was held in September 1973, the squadron insignia JBG 33 and JBG 36 were added to the vertical stabiliser. The 7-22 had a ventral fin of the early design with which the first AJ 37s were also equipped. There were also two air intakes under the fuselage.
AJ 37 15-10, c/n 37051, F15-Wing, Söderhamn, 1978. The starboard air intake was replaced by an unpainted part and displayed during an air show at F10 Änngelholm in June 1978. Note the two smaller air intakes on the underside and a later ventral fin.
