The A-26 Invader, a twin-engine fighter aircraft designed and manufactured by the American company Douglas, had an extraordinary longevity.
The first examples reached the front lines of World War II in 1944, and later variants were involved in all the major conflicts of the 1950s and 1960s, such as the Korean and Indochina Wars and even the Vietnam War.
The most widely produced version was the "B" model, which was characterized by its heavy armament.
The enclosed nose section housed between 6 and 8 Browning M2 .50 caliber (12.7 mm) machine guns, which significantly increased its firepower.
The Invader's robust construction also allowed the nose to be equipped with 20 mm or 37 mm cannons, as well as a 75 mm howitzer. Powered by two reliable Pratt & Whitney R-2800 "Double Wasp" radial engines, each with 2000 hp, the Invader could reach a top speed of 570 km/h even at full operating load.
