During World War II, a version was developed for military use: the Douglas C-47 Skytrain.
Produced in large numbers by American factories, it was used extensively by the Allies on all fronts.
In particular, the C-47s received by the British Royal Air Force and Commonwealth Air Forces were named “Dakota” and were used for tactical transport, paratrooper launching and medical evacuations. Thanks to its two 1200 hp Pratt & Whitney engines, the “Dakota” was able to reach a top speed of 360 km/h.
It had a payload of 2500 kg or capacity for 28 soldiers.
