The Ki-61 earned the respect of the Allies in battles for New Guinea, the Philippines, Taiwan and Okinawa.
They formed part of Tokyo's anti-aircraft defenses, but were not enough to counter the B-29 flying fortress.
In total, 3078 machines of all versions were produced.
