Designed in the early 1930s as a fast bomber, the aircraft was also known as the "Flying Pencil".
It was popular with its crews due to its handling, especially at low altitude.
A version was developed for the Yugoslav Air Force.
The aircraft had an extended nose, Yugoslav and Czechoslovak instruments and Gnome-Rhône 14 N engines, and an armament consisting of three Belgian FN 7.7 mm machine guns.
36 units were delivered from Germany, the first of them in October 1937.
First, 20 units of Do 17Ka-1 bombers were delivered, then 14 units of Do 17Ka-2, which could also be used for reconnaissance, and finally two units of the Do 17Kb-1 version, which was already based on a more modern version of the Do-17M and was the model for licensed production.
On the very first day of the German attack, a total of 41 machines were lost.
The others fought defensive battles.
