Heinkel He-111 P2

The Heinkel He111 made its first flight in 1935, when Germany was banned from building bombers under the Treaty of Versailles. It was initially disguised as a fast transport aircraft.
Its true purpose soon became clear, however, when it was used as a bomber in the Spanish Civil War.
The early variants proved to be capable fast bombers, with few lost to enemy action.
By the start of World War II, the He111 had undergone some significant changes, leading to the P model.
The engines were now more powerful Daimler Benz DB601 engines, and most of the crew were housed in an enlarged glass nose.
This gave them excellent visibility, but left them very vulnerable.
During the Battle of Britain, the P was scrapped, but continued in service in some numbers.
Against the modern RAF fighters, the He111 now suffered from a lack of speed and defensive armament. Before being used for night operations, the He111 formed the backbone of the Luftwaffe's bomber fleet, but suffered some heavy losses.
