The SB (Skorostnoy Bombardirovschik - high-speed bomber) was one of the world's first twin-engine bombers with smooth metal bodywork and a retractable chassis. SB (ANT-40) has in the design bureau of A.N. Tupolev under the supervision of AA Archangelsky. It made its maiden flight on October 7, 1934.

M-100 engines powered the first production aircraft. They took part in the Spanish Civil War (called "Katiushka" by Republicans and "Martin Bomber" by Nationalists).

Since 1937 SB were produced with M-100A engines and three-bladed propellers. These planes became the basis of Soviet bomber aviation. SB took part in many armed conflicts in the late 1930s and early stages of the Soviet-German war.

1938 began the license construction of SB 2M-100 in Czechoslovakia as Avia B-71. These aircraft later served in the Bulgarian Air Force and the German Air Force.
