It was developed directly from the Vought F-8 Crusade fighter aircraft.
The A-7 was characterized by the large front air intake under the cabin, the 35° folding swept wing to optimize use and storage on the aircraft carrier's flight decks, and the introduction of a modern head-up display to improve operational capability.
Thanks to its underwing weapons mounts, the A-7 was capable of carrying an impressive attack load based on conventional bombs, guided bombs such as the Paveway, and air-to-surface missiles.
The A-7E was the last version produced for the US Navy with improved operational capabilities and the ability to use the Harpoon anti-ship missiles and the AGM-88 HARM anti-radiation missiles.
