The F-14 Tomcat followed a history of "Cats" in the military. The F4F Wildcat and F6F Hellcat fought in the air years before the Tomcat. In the late 1960s, the US Navy canceled its TFX program and decided to focus on a fleet defense aircraft. Grumman had already begun development of the F-14 and was definitely on its way to a "Cat" designation. The person in charge of this project was Admiral Tom Conolly, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Air. The aircraft was named “Tom’s Cat” long before the official name “Tomcat” was adopted.
