Built to meet the Air Ministry's extremely demanding requirements for a fast, high-flying strategic bomber capable of carrying a nuclear device, the Vulcan represented a 100% improvement in performance over any British bomber aircraft to date.
When the Vulcan made its maiden flight in August 1952, the Avro team was well on its way to presenting the Royal Air Force with not only the world's first delta bomber, but also one of the world's most effective attack bombers. When the Vulcan entered service with No. 83 Squadron at RAF Waddington in July 1957, Britain now had the world's fastest nuclear-capable bomber.
By the time of the Falklands conflict in 1982, the venerable Avro Vulcan was on the verge of being retired.
The role of nuclear deterrence had been transferred to the Royal Navy's submarines and the end of the distinctive delta jet aircraft was sealed.
The Argentinian invasion of the Falklands, however, meant that the RAF had to use the aging bomber for another role. The Vulcan was the only aircraft capable of delivering a bomb load from RAF Wideawake on Ascension Island to the island, although this would have required multiple refuelling in the air.
The Vulcans of the last three squadrons still using the bomber (Nos. 44, 50 and 101) carried out a series of raids between April and June, codenamed "Black Buck".
The most famous attack was "Black Buck One", in which XM607 managed to damage the runway at Port Stanley with one of its twenty-one bombs.
This surprise attack prevented fast jets from using the airfield and was the longest bombing raid in history up to that point.
