The Grumman F-14 was developed in part based on the experience gained with the F-111, a multi-role aircraft designed by General Dynamics, whose Navy version, the F111B, was built by Grumman.
The F-14A flew for the first time on December 21, 1970, and production models were put into service with squadrons from 1973. The VF-1 and VF-2 squadrons accompanied the aircraft carrier Enterprise's last voyage to Vietnam, but never saw combat.
In the 1986 film "Top Gun", the F-14A played a major role, as the protagonist flew it.
