During the Cold War, all strategists dreamed of a bomber with the cargo capacity and autonomy of the B-52 and that could fly faster than the B-58, - thus the B-70 programme was born.
After years of work on the drawing board and cut-throat competition between Boeing and North American Aviation, the latter's design prevailed in December 1957 and won the contract for the first 30 aircraft to enter service by 1965.
By 1959, however, it became clear that the still untested B-70 would not survive the new air combat scene technology, and the programme was reduced to a minimum.
Eventually two prototypes were built, the first of which took to the air in September 1964, and the XB-70 Valkyrie demonstrated that they were capable of flying at speeds in excess of Mach 3.
Today they are considered by many scientists and aircraft enthusiasts to be the most beautiful aircraft ever built.
