The twin-engine Sukhoi Su-27K "Sea Flanker" air superiority fighter, later redesignated the Su-33, is the carrier-based variant of the well-known Sukhoi Su-27.
This naval version, which retains the Su-27's exceptional performance and distinctive aerodynamic design, was designed and constructed for use on the Russian Navy's aircraft carriers.
To fulfill this role, the aircraft was structurally modified to strengthen the airframe and landing gear and make it suitable for naval operations, including the addition of an arresting hook.
The newly developed folding wings also optimized onboard capacity in carrier hangars.
The first operational activities took place aboard the Admiral Kuznetsov in the mid-1990s.
