In late 1943, Leros was the scene of a fierce but brief battle that formed the central part of the Dodecanese Operation.
British troops had occupied Leros on 15 September 1943 following the Italian surrender.
This drew German air raids and a combined amphibious/airborne invasion codenamed Operation Leopard, which began on 12 November.
The assault troops included paratroopers and an amphibious assault company from the Brandenburg Division (1./Küstenjäger-Abteilung).
The Brandenburgers were a German special unit, and a total of around 500 Brandenburgers were dropped on Leros.
As the German troops enjoyed air superiority, the battle was over within four days and 3200 British and 5350 Italian soldiers surrendered.
The Battle of Leros is generally considered to be the last major defeat of the British Army in World War II.
