The Hohenstaufen Division took its name from a historically noble German family line that descended from King Friedrich II (1194-1250).
The 9th SS Panzer Division "Hohenstaufen" was formed in December 1942 and was stationed in France when the Allied invasion of Normandy began in June 1944.
