By mid-1967, American troops in Indochina already had 2000 helicopters, and within a year their numbers had increased to 4200 units.
Helicopters were ideally suited for combat operations in jungle conditions.
They were used for reconnaissance, aerial fire cover for ground troops, landing infantry and transporting goods.
Among the transport helicopters, the CH-54 heavy crane helicopters performed excellently.
Their crews undertook the transport of various cargoes and weapons - from bulldozers to combat boats - and also participated in the evacuation of damaged helicopters and aircraft. It was a difficult service, sometimes taking fire from the ground.
The war in Vietnam became a serious test for the US helicopters, during which they gained enormous combat experience.
