The first German victories in World War II using paratroopers provided the impetus for the creation of a U.S. airborne program, and a fifty-man test platoon was formed on June 25, 1940.
The 101st Airborne Division is the most famous paratrooper unit to serve in World War II.
It was nicknamed the "Screaming Eagles" because of the insignia (an open-beaked eagle) that the soldiers wore on their shoulders.
The 101st Airborne Division participated in the D-Day military operations with numerous parachute jumps on strategic targets behind enemy lines.
The 101st Airborne Division also participated in Operation Market Garden and, in particular, in the Battle of the Bulge at the Siege of Bastogne, where it vigorously resisted the final counterattack by German troops.
