This distinctive “bent-wing” aircraft gained notoriety in the early stages of the war, when Germany had virtual air superiority.
The Stuka's design incorporated several innovative features, including automatic dive brakes under both wings to ensure that the aircraft would recover from its dive attack even if the pilot became unconscious due to the acceleration.
It soon became a symbol of the German “Blitzkrieg” in the first phase of World War II, providing air support for the Wehrmacht’s tank divisions.
During the war, new versions with different operational profiles were introduced.
The Ju-87G was developed as an “anti-tank” version of the Stuka to counter the large number of enemy armored vehicles fighting on the Eastern Front in 1943.
Stuka “ace” Hans Ulrich Rudel suggested the installation of two 37mm Flak-18s housed in underwing stations to better counter this evolving threat.
With this configuration, the Ju-87G “Kanonenvogel” proved to be extremely effective in the hands of experienced pilots.
