Since the Russian invasion of neighboring Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the importance of armored combat troops has once again become the focus of public attention. Within the Bundeswehr, the terms armored troop and armored troops are used when referring to armored combat troops. What initially differs by just one letter is, however, much more:
While the armored troop with their main weapon system, the Leopard 2 main battle tank mounted in various configurations, can be highly mobile and have a long-range effect against armored enemy forces, the armored troops also include the armored infantrymen, who are equipped with the Marder infantry fighting vehicle or the Puma infantry fighting vehicle. The Panzergrenadiers work both mounted in the front and rear combat areas of their armored personnel carriers and as a rifle squad dismounted from the vehicle with small arms and anti-tank weapons.
The main principles of armored troops in operation are, above all, their high dynamics and speed, which they can use, for example, in attack operations in difficult terrain, but also in open or built-up terrain.
