The Northrop F-5 is a lightweight, supersonic fighter aircraft originally developed in the late 1950s.
The F-5A and F-5B Freedom Fighter have a small, highly aerodynamic airframe around two compact, high-thrust General Electric J85 engines.
The emphasis is on performance and low maintenance costs.
This compact design has made it a popular export aircraft.
Although primarily designed for air superiority as a day fighter, it is also a capable base for ground attack missions.
During the Cold War, over 800 units were produced for the US allies by 1972.
