April 1943 saw the start of deliveries of the "Version H", in which the long KwK 40 L/48 was fitted as standard. The front basic armouring of the hull was now 80 mm. The vehicles were delivered with side skirts as standard. These were 5 mm thick plates which were removable from the hull and fixed to the turret and protected against anti-tank shells. The side slits on the turret for gunners and loaders were omitted as they had lost their function anyway due to the attached skirts.
