1:48 scale Hong Kong Models B-17G Early

Verified Purchase - from Marko Joensuu posted 2/29/2020 6:00:55 PM
This is Hong Kong Models totally new 1:48 scale B-17G (Early Production) kit. HK Models has already released three 1:32 scale B-17 kits and this is their first 1:48 scale B-17 issue. Basically, this is a scaled down version of their 1:32 scale B-17 kits' design, but with noticeable corrections to the forward windshield and nose directly in front of the windshield. Therefore, it can be fairly well said that this is the best B-17G kit in any scale. As always, there has been some claims that there might be some accuracy-issues embedded in this kit, but on the other hand, some true B-17 experts have already commented that this 1:48 scale HKM B-17G Early model builds up to be correct looking B-17G Early with the correct stance; and that's for sure good enough for me concerning any accuracy-issues. Overall the plastic of this kit is a very good quality. The surface detail of this kit is very refined and to scale and all the clear parts fit extremely well from the outside. The kit includes a complete interior - given the restrictions of the scale - with complete bomb bay (doors can be set in open position) and both the nose hatch and waist side entry door can be posed open. Italian Cartograf made decals are very high quality (as usual with Cartograf), with markings for two 8th Air Force B-17G Earlies: Olive Drab/ Grey color B-17G-15-BO, s/n 42-31353, "Queenie", LG-O, 332nd BS/ 91st BG. Bassingbourn, UK, Early Spring 1944. This is very nice markings and paint scheme/livery. Natural Metal (Silver) color B-17G-40-VE, s/n 42-98008, "American Beauty", 25-G, 834th BS/ 486th BG. Sudbury, UK, Late Summer 1944. This is another very nice markings and paint scheme/livery. This is not a perfect kit by any means, but as already pointed out, the plastic of the kit is very good and surface details are superb and the kit is extremely well engineered. A black and white instruction sheet without any color profiles for markings and painting maybe a drawback/weakness for somebody, but regardless of that, the instructions are clear and easy to follow. Finally, out of the box this 1:48 scale HKM B-17G Early kit is much superior to the old Revell/Monogram B-17Gs and Fs (which can be made great kits with lots of aftermarket stuff) and quite likely the best B-17G kit in any scale; hence five stars. Highly recommended kit and certainly a must kit for B-17 Flying Fortress fans. Thanks Hong Kong Models and MBK!
