The first space station, Tiangong-1 (Heavenly Palace), was launched on September 29, 2011 and placed into Earth orbit to dock with a spacecraft.
Shenzhou-8 followed on October 31 and was an unmanned spacecraft whose purpose was to test the ability to automatically dock and undock a spacecraft with the space station.
The tests went smoothly and the following year, Shenzhou-9, the first manned mission to the space station, was launched.
