The Zeppelin-class aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin was an aircraft carrier built by the Kriegsmarine during World War II, and Germany's only aircraft carrier with a displacement of about 33,000 tons.
It was laid down by Deutsche Werke in Kiel on December 28, 1936.
Due to ownership disputes between the Kriegsmarine and the Luftwaffe, which resulted in the construction plans being continually delayed, and the subsequent outbreak of World War II, the construction project was cancelled in May 1940, although 85% of the construction work had been completed.
This aircraft carrier of this class was ultimately never completed, largely due to Hitler's decision to use a large portion of the Navy's funds for the development of submarines.
On April 25, 1945, the Soviet Union recovered the hull of the "Graf Zeppelin" after the war, which had been hit by a mine and sunk in tow by the Soviet Union to prevent it from falling into Soviet hands.
In August 1947, the Soviet Union re-acquired the towed hull after careful examination as a target ship destroyed by the Soviet Navy.
