The Scharnhorst was a German battle ship in the Kriegsmarine.
She was the lead ship of her class, which also included her sister ship Gneisenau.
The ship was built at the Kriegsmarine shipyard in Wilhelmshaven.
The keel was laid on June 15, 1935.
The launch took place on October 3, 1936.
The ship was completed in January 1939,
