The Scharnhorst as it looked in 1941. The 31,500 ton warship was commissioned on January 7, 1939 and often operated alongside its sister ship Gneisenau.
With a top speed of 31.5 knots, this battleship with its nine 11-inch guns caused devastating damage to Allied shipping.
It was involved in the invasion of Norway in 1940, during which it sank the British aircraft carrier HMS Glorious. In early 1941, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau set out into the Atlantic to attack Allied shipping routes.
Scharnhorst was finally sunk off the North Cape in Norway in December 1943.
